Rematch Passes 5 Million Players, But Crossplay Still Weeks Away

Rematch has just hit an impressive milestone, crossing 5 million unique players across all platforms within a month of launch.

Yet despite the strong numbers and over 60 million hours played globally, one thing still eludes fans: crossplay.

Developer Sloclap, known for their hit Sifu, celebrated the milestone on X (formerly Twitter), thanking the community and promising ongoing improvements. But fans haven’t forgotten how the studio dropped the crossplay bombshell just hours before launch – a delay that’s now extended to 6–9 weeks post-launch. Sloclap has since apologized, citing late-stage bugs and matchmaking issues that demanded urgent attention.

The studio’s most recent update touched on key improvements driven by player feedback. While the game’s core – its slick gameplay and tight mechanics – continues to impress, the surrounding experience remains under construction. Persistent bugs, shaky netcode, and a frustrating ranking system have soured some players’ sessions.

This week, a patch is expected to drop, introducing controller remapping, colorblind accessibility options, and a round of bug fixes. Broader fixes are also in the pipeline, including netcode optimizations, ranked queue improvements, toxic player reporting tools, and revamped regional servers. However, there’s no firm timeline for most of these enhancements.

The lack of crossplay is especially painful for a game that thrives on competition. With friends split across platforms and matchmaking pools limited, frustration has simmered – even as player numbers continue to rise. Some fans are worried this could all go to waste if the structural flaws aren’t resolved quickly.

In a market long dominated by EA’s FC franchise, Rematch stands out not just as a fresh contender but as a reminder of what could’ve been if monopolies hadn’t stifled innovation in football games. It’s not just about crossplay – it’s about breaking out of a stagnant cycle and offering football fans something genuinely new. Here’s hoping Sloclap delivers on that promise – and soon.
