Samsung’s much-anticipated tri-fold flagship, the Galaxy G Fold, is set to make its debut with a limited production run in September. This groundbreaking device is expected to be unveiled at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event, though the company will likely focus on teasing the new device rather than overshadowing the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7.
Reports suggest that mass production of the Galaxy G Fold will not begin until later this year, with the initial quantities being quite limited. This scarcity suggests a high price tag, possibly as much as 4 million Korean won (approximately $3,000), making it a luxury item for those with deep pockets.
The limited availability of the Galaxy G Fold is likely due to the complex production process and the high cost of manufacturing the tri-fold OLED display. Samsung plans to start production at its primary smartphone factory in Gumi, with Samsung Display expected to begin producing the tri-fold OLED panel in August. This new device will sport a 10-inch display when fully unfolded, transforming it into a tablet-like form factor. Despite the larger screen size, the battery will be smaller than the Huawei Mate XT’s 5,600mAh battery due to space constraints and thermal issues. The Galaxy G Fold will feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, as alternatives like MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400+ are considered less competitive. Additionally, the device will likely offer 25W charging, but there are no confirmations on whether it will support Qi wireless charging.
With production costs and limited quantities in mind, the Galaxy G Fold will initially be available in select markets, including China and South China. The success of the initial launch will be crucial for Samsung to decide on future production and market expansion. Stay tuned for more details as Samsung prepares to reveal this innovative device.
