Samsung has rolled out the June 2025 security update for its Galaxy S25 series, and while it may seem like just another routine update, there’s more to it than meets the eye. This update, which is now live in South Korea, could mark an important milestone as it prepares the Galaxy S25 lineup for the upcoming One UI 8 release.
Although the update doesn’t introduce any visible One UI 8 features just yet, it does include a key change that could point to what’s coming next for the device.
The update, with build version S938NKSS4AYE5/S938NOKR4AYE5/S938NKSS4AYE5, brings the bootloader to version 4, a subtle but significant shift. Why does this matter? A bootloader update locks the device into a new firmware branch, one that aligns with Samsung’s internal testing for One UI 8. This means that One UI 8’s beta could be just around the corner.
While Samsung has not yet added any features from One UI 8, this update indicates that the software is on its way. One UI 8 will be based on Android 16, which Google has recently teased. This major update is expected to be officially launched in July, likely alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. Samsung’s timing for the release fits with its regular schedule for mid-year One UI updates.
What can users expect from One UI 8? According to early hands-on reports, One UI 8 will bring incremental tweaks rather than a full redesign. For example, pop-out menus in apps like Gallery will now feature encircled buttons. The update will focus on enhancing the consistency and fine-tuning the user interface, ensuring a smoother experience overall. The Galaxy S25 series will lead the charge for new features, with the Now Brief AI assistant being one of the standout additions. This feature, which provides personalized suggestions and reminders based on user routines, was previously available only on the Galaxy S25. Now, it will be extended to more devices.
One UI 8 will also improve existing features, such as Quick Share file sharing, which will be more accessible with its updated functionality. Samsung Internet will get a fresh new interface design, and Samsung DeX will support higher-resolution displays. The new calendar system will feature smarter tools to help users manage reminders and schedule events more effectively.
Excitingly, One UI 8 will also bring features from the latest Galaxy devices to older models. For instance, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 will gain log video recording capability, which was previously exclusive to the Galaxy S25 series. This shows that Samsung is committed to providing the latest flagship features to a wider range of devices.
While the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 will be the first to receive the update, it’s clear that the Galaxy S25 series will soon follow. Mid-range and budget models will eventually get their turn, too. So while the June security update doesn’t add any flashy new features, it sets the stage for the imminent arrival of One UI 8.
