Samsung has recently filed a patent application that could signal an exciting new feature for future Galaxy Z Flip models.
The patent, submitted to the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), showcases a unique display interface on the edge of the phone, reminiscent of Samsung’s curved display devices from the past.
For context, the design in question is a “battery level graphical user interface” for a foldable clamshell-style phone. The curved display on the top frame is a throwback to Samsung’s earlier devices like the Galaxy Note Edge, which was released in 2014. This design could be a nod to Samsung’s legacy of innovative display technology.
The patent’s illustration reveals an indicator that visually tracks the remaining battery life. A colorful line, representing the battery percentage, runs up the curved edge of the display. As the battery depletes, the color of the line changes to provide an easy visual cue. For example, a full charge shows the line in blue, while at 50%, it turns gold, and at 10%, the line turns red, acting as a warning. The remaining battery percentage is displayed numerically at the bottom of the screen, offering a quick and intuitive way for users to monitor their battery status.
The patent also outlines other features, such as a USB-C port for charging and data transfer, dual speaker grilles, an edge-to-edge cover display, and dual cameras. This design strongly resembles the current Galaxy Z Flip, making it a potential future iteration of the device.
However, while Samsung’s filing for this patent indicates the company is exploring new ways to enhance the Galaxy Z Flip, it’s not guaranteed that we’ll see this feature in the next model. If the feature is implemented, it could appear as early as 2026, suggesting that it won’t make it into this year’s release.
