Sega has responded to the backlash surrounding the release of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine – Master Crafted Edition by expanding its refund policy, introducing a 50% upgrade discount, and promising a series of game-improving patches.
Despite the game’s enhanced visuals and quality-of-life updates, it has received a ‘mostly negative’ rating on Steam, with many fans frustrated over pricing and limited improvements.
This edition, which is not branded as a remaster, revives the classic 2011 title from Relic Entertainment with 4K resolution, sharper textures, revamped character models, modern controls, and improved UI. It launched on June 10 for Xbox Series X|S and PC and was added to Game Pass, but there’s no word on a PS5 release.
While Game Pass users appear relatively satisfied, Steam buyers balked at the $39.99 / £34.99 price, especially when compared to the Anniversary Edition. Common complaints include awkward UI tweaks, unclear visual changes, and the absence of a free or discounted upgrade for previous owners.
In a recent Steam post, Sega acknowledged these concerns: “We’ve heard your concerns around pricing.” The company has extended the refund period to July 10, 2025, allowing users to claim a full refund-regardless of playtime-before 6pm BST / 10pm PST.
Moreover, owners of the Anniversary Edition can now purchase the Master Crafted Edition at a 50% discount until the same July 10 deadline. However, those who already purchased the game at full price must manually request a refund and re-buy at the discounted rate.
Sega apologized for the confusion and emphasized its commitment to fixing the game. A detailed patch roadmap has been released, with planned improvements such as Steam Deck fixes, UI upgrades, network enhancements, and better controller support. Audio and visual updates and improved localisation in Dutch, Polish, and Italian are also in progress.
“We’ll continue listening, improving, and communicating as these changes go live,” Sega concluded.
Although this misstep contrasts the recent success of Warhammer 40K titles like Space Marine 2, there’s hope that these efforts can help the Master Crafted Edition recover before the launch of Dawn of War: Definitive Edition later this year.
