Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair collaboration with Sonic the Hedgehog dropped today, and it’s already causing a buzz. The moment the set went live, eager fans flooded the site, only to be met with long queues and wait times. The Secret Lair series, known for its artistic twists and creative takes on Magic’s classic cards, has seen everything from reimagined card layouts to full-blown crossover sets.
Past collaborations, like Final Fantasy, also sold out quickly, setting expectations high for this new Sonic drop.
Sonic the Hedgehog, the iconic blue blur, certainly didn’t disappoint in terms of demand. Fans flocked to the site to grab the exclusive set featuring Sonic and his companions, but unfortunately, the overwhelming demand led to significant delays. As wait times stretched longer, social media was flooded with complaints from frustrated fans who were stuck in queues.
Some cards in the set are reprints of beloved Magic classics, like Unexpected Windfall, Sol Ring, and Lightning Greaves, while others are new, offering fresh takes and potentially new Commanders for those looking to build a deck around their favorite Sonic character. Shortly after the launch, the Secret Lair account acknowledged the high traffic, warning that wait times would be longer than usual. Later updates reassured fans that the team was actively working to resolve the issue.
Speaking from personal experience, after attempting to load up my cart about 30 minutes after the drop, I found myself staring at a queue page with a “more than an hour” wait time. While some managed to get through gradually, it became clear that patience was a must for anyone hoping to get their hands on the set.
Wizards of the Coast introduced a two-item limit per person, which seemed to alleviate some of the pressure. However, there has been some criticism regarding the shift from a print-to-order to a limited-run model, which started last year. Despite some frustration, there were also stories of successful purchases, showing that perseverance can pay off. In the coming days, we’ll see just how scarce this set becomes, especially as resellers may start listing them for higher prices on third-party platforms.
Meanwhile, Magic: The Gathering’s next major set, Edge of Eternities, is set to release on August 1, with pre-releases starting on July 25.
