The Sonic the Hedgehog crossover with Magic: The Gathering’s Secret Lair is already making waves, and unfortunately, it’s not all about the fun of the cards. Despite going live just yesterday, eager fans rushing to grab the limited-edition sets have already been met with the all-too-familiar sight of scalpers looking to cash in. The boutique collection, featuring rare and unique cards, includes new designs and some special reprints with a Sonic twist.
Three sets make up the Sonic release, each one bringing a different take on the iconic hedgehog and his world.
The Friends & Foes collection introduces new Commander cards featuring beloved characters like Knuckles, Amy, Dr. Eggman, and Shadow. Meanwhile, the Turbo Gear and Chasing Adventure sets offer reprints of popular cards such as Lightning Greaves and Unexpected Windfall, each adorned with exclusive Sonic-themed art. But while the sets are still available on the Secret Lair website at retail prices, it didn’t take long for resellers to jump on the opportunity.
By 9am PT, when the set went live, a queue quickly formed, as expected. Although limits were set to prevent mass purchases, scalpers still managed to snag some of the highly sought-after sets and are now listing them on eBay for exorbitant prices. The Turbo Gear Foil Edition, for example, is going for $70 (or best offer), well above the original price of $39.99. Even pricier listings are showing up, with some entire Sonic collections (non-foil) being marked up to $349.99.
While it’s no surprise that some of the sets are getting flipped for higher prices, what’s odd is that several collections are still available on the official Secret Lair site. The Friends & Foes Foil Edition, for instance, is still priced at $49.99, though it’s likely to sell out soon. It’s a strange situation where availability and scarcity seem to be playing a tug-of-war as the demand skyrockets. If you’re eyeing these sets, now’s the time to get them before prices reach even crazier heights.
For those who are more excited for what’s next, Magic: The Gathering’s new set, Edge of Eternities, is dropping on August 1, with pre-release starting on July 25. Keep an eye out for that one too!
