Sony Acquires 2.5% Stake in Bandai Namco, Strengthening Entertainment Ties

In a major move this morning, Sony confirmed its strategic partnership with Japanese entertainment giant Bandai Namco, announcing a 2.5% stake acquisition. Sony is purchasing 16 million shares of Bandai Namco for approximately 68 billion yen (around $465 million).

This acquisition gives Sony a significant yet modest influence over the company’s shares, marking a new chapter in their collaboration.

Bandai Namco’s Executive Vice President, Nobuhiko Momoi, expressed excitement over the alliance, highlighting their “IP axis strategy” aimed at maximizing intellectual property (IP) value. This strategy focuses on utilizing the strengths of their IP to create the best products, at the right time, and for the right audience. By joining forces with Sony, the two companies plan to explore new entertainment opportunities, blending Sony’s technological capabilities with Bandai Namco’s impressive catalog of IPs to engage global fans.

Toshimoto Mitomo, Sony’s Chief Strategy Officer, added that the partnership is designed to generate content that exceeds expectations and delivers emotional experiences, or “Kando”, to fans worldwide. Sony and Bandai Namco hope that by combining their strengths, they’ll be able to enhance IP value and accelerate the realization of Sony’s long-term “Creative Entertainment Vision”.

While the collaboration is focused on anime and video content, it’s expected that it may expand into other areas, such as music and games. However, it’s unlikely that Bandai Namco’s popular games will become exclusive to PlayStation consoles, especially considering Sony’s relatively small stake. This acquisition mirrors Sony’s previous moves, such as their purchase of 10% of Kadokawa Corporation, the parent company of FromSoftware, in 2024. At the same time, Tencent has increased its shares in Kadokawa to nearly 8%, showing a growing competition in the entertainment industry.
