Sony May Acquire Warner Bros. Discovery Streaming and Studios Division

In a surprising turn of events, rumors have emerged that Sony is eyeing Warner Bros. Discovery’s (WBD) streaming and studios division. This speculation follows WBD’s announcement earlier this month that it will split into two distinct entities by mid-2026. One entity, WBD Global Networks, will continue handling traditional cable programming, including sports, news, and entertainment. Meanwhile, WBD Streaming and Studios, which includes HBO, TV and movie production, and the gaming division, will spin off as a separate entity. This restructuring has raised questions about the future of the latter division, leading many to believe that it could eventually be sold.

Fast forward a few days, and the wrestling news site SEScoops has hinted that Sony is already considering an acquisition of WBD Streaming and Studios.

While it’s still early days and the split will need to take place before any formal talks happen, such a move could align perfectly with Sony’s strategy. Acquiring this division would significantly enhance Sony’s movie, TV, and gaming portfolio, granting access to high-value intellectual properties like the DC universe, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones.

However, it’s essential to approach this rumor with caution. Though SEScoops has a solid history of breaking wrestling-related news, the idea of Sony taking over such a massive and diversified division is still speculative at this point. If a deal were to go through, it might not be until 2027 or beyond.

On the gaming front, Warner Bros. Discovery has faced challenges, with its gaming division suffering significant losses. Despite the success of Hogwarts Legacy, other titles such as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Gotham Knights, and MultiVersus failed to meet expectations. Additionally, the closure of the historic Monolith studio and the cancellation of its Wonder Woman game have raised doubts about the future of the gaming arm. Recently, Warner Bros. Games restructured around its four key IPs-Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, DC, and Mortal Kombat-but the future remains uncertain.

If Sony were to acquire the division, it’s unclear whether it could turn things around for Warner Bros. Games. However, gamers likely need not worry about these games becoming PlayStation exclusives. Titles of such magnitude would be too valuable to limit to a single platform, as Sony has already demonstrated with its acquisition of Bungie, allowing the studio to continue developing multiplatform games.
