SpaceX’s Exploded Starship Rocket Revealed In First Image After Last Week’s Fireball

SpaceX’s Starship rocket experienced a significant setback last week when its upper-stage spacecraft exploded at the test stand. The explosion came as a surprise, considering the lack of major ground anomalies since last year. The rocket, which was scheduled for a test flight later this month, was filled with fuel at the time of the incident, causing the fireball that lit up the night sky.

The explosion was caused by a malfunction in the rocket’s secondary tank, which is crucial for stabilizing the pressure within the spacecraft during launch.

The upper-stage design, which is a second-generation model, has yet to complete a successful flight test. Despite this, SpaceX’s Starship program has made notable progress. Starship Flight 9, which took place earlier this year, saw significant improvements in the upper-stage spacecraft’s performance. While it still faced challenges with reentry control, the ship successfully turned off its engines mid-flight, a first for the program.

Images of the aftermath from the explosion have surfaced on social media, showing the severely damaged spacecraft and test stand. The images reveal the deformed Starship with its paint burned off, though some heat shield tiles are still intact. A potential Starlink kit, likely part of the upper-stage ship, is visible at the bottom of the image. The damage to the ground testing facilities is also extensive, presenting a greater challenge for SpaceX than losing the rocket itself. Rebuilding these facilities may take time, but SpaceX has a history of rapid recovery.

The explosion has led to speculation about the timing of Starship Flight 10, which was expected to happen by the end of this month. While SpaceX has not released additional details, it is clear that the company is working on rebuilding its test stand. The next steps for the Starship program remain uncertain, but SpaceX’s history of overcoming setbacks suggests they will continue moving forward with their ambitious plans.

Never thought we'd see an explosion like this after last year. SpaceX better bounce back quickly!
