Mii Fighter Glitch in Smash Ultimate Crashes Cross-Gen Online Matches – Nintendo Responds

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate may be the crown jewel of Nintendo’s fighting game lineup, but it’s currently facing a bizarre glitch when played across the two Switch generations. According to Nintendo’s official Japanese support page, a serious issue has surfaced involving Mii Fighters during online matches between players using the original Switch and the new Switch 2.

The result? Matches crash instantly when a Mii Fighter is involved – abruptly booting both players before the action even begins.

The problem seems specific to Mii Fighters, likely because of the way custom avatars are processed differently on the two consoles. This includes not just gameplay, but even visual data – with Nintendo acknowledging that Mii Fighter thumbnails may fail to save correctly on the newer hardware.

While Nintendo hasn’t provided a full explanation yet, fans are already speculating that the difference in avatar data structures or online synchronization methods might be at the root of the issue. In the meantime, Nintendo has politely asked players to avoid using Mii Fighters in online play until a patch is released. No release date has been shared yet, but the company assures an update is in the works.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which launched in 2018, remains one of Nintendo’s most iconic titles – boasting a staggering 36 million copies sold and the largest character roster in franchise history. But this hiccup, coming just as fans are transitioning to the newer console, is a reminder that even flagship titles aren’t immune to cross-gen growing pains.

Interestingly, while rumors of a new Smash title continue to swirl, series creator Masahiro Sakurai has recently announced his next project – and it’s not another Smash Bros. Instead, Sakurai is shifting gears to work on Kirby Air Riders, a fresh entry starring Nintendo’s pink mascot, set to glide onto the Switch 2 in late 2025.

For now, if you’re eager for online chaos, maybe dust off your kart and head over to Mario Kart – or just pick someone other than your custom Mii until this gets sorted. After all, who would’ve thought Sans and Creeper could break the system?
