In a surprising turn of events, Techland, the developer behind the popular Dying Light series, has canceled two of its upcoming projects. One of these was a highly anticipated fantasy action RPG that had been in development for nearly a decade. The decision was shared by Techland in a statement to Wccftech, acknowledging that game development is often unpredictable and may require shifting focus in order to deliver the best possible experiences.
However, the company assured fans that no staff reductions had occurred as part of these cancellations. Instead, developers have been reassigned to other projects currently in the works.
For now, Techland’s primary focus is on Dying Light: The Beast, which is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on August 22. The game will also be available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2025. After this major release, Techland promises to share more details about its future titles, which may include a new entry in the Call of Juarez series.
The canceled fantasy RPG had been in development for at least nine years, with some early artwork first revealed in 2022. Described as a next-gen experience set in an expansive open world, the game was envisioned as a major step away from Techland’s previous work. Despite the promising concept, the project was put on hold as the studio shifted its focus to Dying Light 2: Stay Human.
In its place, rumors suggest that Techland is working on a new Call of Juarez title. The studio regained the rights to the series from Ubisoft in 2018, and fans of the franchise are hoping to see a fresh take on the Wild West shooter. As for the future, Techland’s fans are left wondering what this shift in focus means for the studio’s direction, as the company remains tight-lipped about any upcoming projects beyond Dying Light: The Beast.
