The Alters Surpasses 280K Copies Sold Amid AI Controversy

The Alters, the latest title from 11 Bit Studios, has crossed a major milestone with over 280,000 copies sold in its first month. The announcement was made by the studio, who expressed their gratitude for the support of players who have joined protagonist Jan on his emotional journey.

With the game’s success, the studio reflected on the deeply personal process of creating The Alters and how the player community has made the experience even more meaningful.

On the official Steam page, the team wrote, ‘It’s hard to express just how much this means to us. Creating The Alters was a deeply personal journey, and seeing so many of you step into Jan’s world, experiencing his choices, reflecting on his struggles, and connecting with his story, has been incredibly moving. Your support, curiosity, and passion make all the difference. Whether you’ve finished the game or are just beginning, thank you for being part of this adventure.’

The team also teased more content in the future, adding, ‘If you already finished the game, you can be sure that this is only the beginning. Stay tuned and thank you for being with us.’

However, the studio’s success was somewhat marred by controversy when it was revealed that 11 Bit Studios had used generative AI tools for some elements of the game, including certain in-game text and translations. The AI-generated content was initially intended as placeholders, but ended up in the final version of the game due to time constraints. Players first noticed AI-generated text in the background of some scenes, followed by poor translations for films that protagonist Jan can watch on the ship.

After the issue was raised by the community, the studio acknowledged its use of AI tools and explained that it had opted for AI-generated translations due to tight deadlines, choosing not to involve their usual translation partners. The statement noted that the intention was always to correct the translations with the help of their trusted agencies in a post-launch update. The studio admitted, ‘In hindsight, we acknowledge this was the wrong call. Even more so, no matter what we decided, we should have simply let you know.’

Despite these setbacks, The Alters remains a beloved title, with players excited for the future of the game and the promise of more content on the horizon.
