The Batman 2 Script Finally Complete as Matt Reeves Shares Long-Awaited Image Update
Director Matt Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin have officially finished the script for The Batman Part 2. After much anticipation, fans got a sneak peek at this milestone via a black-and-white photo shared by Reeves on X/Twitter. While it might seem like a simple image of the two writers sitting side by side, there’s something more intriguing in the shot: a script adorned with the unmistakable bat logo resting on the table between them.
While neither Reeves nor Tomlin directly confirmed the completion of the script, sources like Variety have verified the exciting news. This update doesn’t come as a shock, especially after DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn mentioned last week that he expected to see the script for The Batman 2 by the end of June. Gunn had expressed his excitement, stating, ‘We feel really good about it… Matt’s excited. I talk to Matt all the time. We’re totally excited about it.’ He also added that while they hadn’t read the script yet, they were eagerly waiting for it.
The first installment of The Batman, which introduced Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, left an undeniable impact on audiences. With its grittier take on Gotham City, the film quickly became a favorite among comic book fans, earning positive reviews from critics (including a perfect score of 10/10 from us) and a strong box office performance, grossing over $772 million globally. Fans have been anxiously awaiting the next chapter of this darker, more detective-focused Batman story, and though the Max spinoff show The Penguin helped fill the void by focusing on Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot, it’s clear that the wait for the sequel has been long and challenging.
Amid the delays, Gunn has been supportive of Reeves’ creative process. He noted, ‘People should get off Matt’s nuts. Let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to.’ And with The Batman 2 now officially on track, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
The sequel is currently slated for release on October 1, 2027. While fans are buzzing with excitement, there’s also some uncertainty about how it will fit within the broader DC Universe, especially with James Gunn’s upcoming Batman film, The Brave and the Bold, which will feature a completely new version of the iconic character. Gunn has expressed concerns over managing multiple Batman interpretations, admitting that this is one of his ‘biggest issues’ within the DCU.
With so much still unknown, all we can do is sit tight and hope that the wait is worth it. For now, though, the future of the Batverse looks promising as we eagerly await the release of The Batman 2 and the new era of DC films that is unfolding before our eyes.
