Thief Returns in VR: A Bold Leap for Stealth Gaming
The iconic stealth franchise Thief is making a long-awaited comeback – this time as a fully immersive VR experience. Revealed during the latest Sony State of Play, Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is being developed for the PlayStation VR2 and is set to release in 2025.
Yes, it’s exclusive to VR – and that’s not a downside. In fact, many fans are calling it the boldest and most exciting move the franchise has made in decades. Forget flat screens for a moment: VR is exactly where a series like Thief belongs.
The trailer introduces us to Magpie, an orphaned thief navigating the shadows of The City, which is under the control of the authoritarian Baron Ulysses Northcrest. As Magpie uncovers a mysterious artifact, the story dives into conspiracies and hidden powers that shape the world around him. From stealthily avoiding guards to picking locks and shooting arrows from the shadows, it’s everything you’d want from a Thief game – now from a fully immersive first-person perspective.
Developed by Maze Theory in collaboration with Vertigo Games and Eidos-Montreal, the game leans into what makes VR special. Sure, some viewers poked fun at the ‘floating hands’ in the trailer, but that’s standard VR visual language – and it hardly detracts from the experience. Quite the opposite: this could be the title that shows just how effective stealth gameplay can be in virtual reality.
As traditional gaming tech evolution slows, it’s VR that’s offering that elusive ‘next-gen’ feeling. Thief VR might be exactly what PSVR2 needs to prove it’s more than just a niche peripheral. With AAA polish and a beloved IP behind it, this game could be a turning point.
Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow is coming in 2025 to PSVR2. No word yet on PCVR or other platforms, but for now, PSVR2 owners have something to be seriously excited about.
