Sneaker Donation Tracked with AirTag Ends Up 800KM Away in Bosnia Thrift Store

When TikTok user Moe.Ha decided to donate an old pair of sneakers, he wasn’t ready to let them go completely. Instead, he slipped an Apple AirTag into one of the shoes and dropped them into a Red Cross bin in Munich.

What followed was a digital journey that fascinated millions online-and raised some questions about how donations really travel.

Using Apple’s Find My app, Moe documented the sneakers’ unexpected path: after five days, they were tracked through Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia before landing in a thrift shop in Bosnia-about 800 kilometers away from where they started.

The final twist? The shoes were on sale for just 10 euros. Intrigued (and probably amused), Moe traveled all the way to Bosnia, found the sneakers sitting on a store shelf, and bought them back. When he asked a staff member where they came from, she told him they were delivered by her boss who lives… in Germany.

This peculiar but enlightening trip through Europe sparked debate online. While some viewers were shocked to see charitable donations end up in thrift shops, the German Red Cross’s explanation clears the air. According to their official process, clothes from donation bins are either sorted and distributed locally, sent to thrift shops, or sold in bulk to recyclers. The profits support humanitarian missions-not shady dealings.

Although this may not be the warm and fuzzy image people expect when they donate, the system is designed for maximum efficiency and impact. The trip a pair of shoes takes might seem strange, but it’s all part of a well-oiled process aiming to do good-whether directly or indirectly.
