Urban Jürgensen UJ-2 Watch Review: Precision Craftsmanship Meets Elegant Design

First Look: Urban Jürgensen UJ-2 – Swiss Elegance Meets Technical Innovation

Urban Jürgensen is stepping confidently into a new era of luxury watchmaking with the release of the UJ-2, a refined timepiece built on tradition but aimed at the modern collector. The brand, now revitalized by the legendary Kari Voutilainen and co-CEO Alex Rosenfield, continues its dedication to precision craftsmanship through this fresh debut model.

Following the success of the UJ-1 Anniversary Watch, the UJ-2 arrives with a more accessible (though still ultra-luxurious) price point and broader availability. At over $100,000 USD, the UJ-2 may be considered entry-level for Urban Jürgensen, yet it remains a statement piece reserved for the most discerning wrists.

The full name, Urban Jürgensen UJ-2 “The Three-Hand Watch With Double Wheel Natural Escapement,” reveals much of its story. Although technically it features four hands, the manually-wound timepiece showcases the same double escapement system known for its enhanced accuracy-something collectors associate with Voutilainen’s finest creations

. Notably, the small seconds dial has been shifted off-center, while a retro-style power reserve indicator adds character just under the 12 (or ‘0’) o’clock position.

Dial craftsmanship remains a high point, featuring traditional guilloché engraving and layered construction. While the asymmetry may polarize tastes, its execution is anything but ordinary-clear, artistic, and purposeful.

What truly sets the UJ-2 apart is the caliber UJ-2 movement, crafted entirely in Switzerland by Voutilainen’s ateliers. Encased in either 18k rose gold or platinum, this movement-running at 2.5Hz with a 52-hour power reserve-is as beautiful as it is functional. Rose gold bridges and meticulous finishing can be admired through the sapphire caseback, a visual treat for horology aficionados.

The UJ-2 case measures 39mm across and 10.9mm thick, delivering a sleek and wearable profile.

Water resistance is rated at 30 meters-not made for diving, but more than enough for daily luxury wear. Four variants of the UJ-2 are available: two in platinum (one with a silver dial, one with a blue dial) and two in 18k rose gold (also in silver and blue). Each carries a retail price of CHF 105,000.

Urban Jürgensen is not trying to reinvent haute horlogerie but to refine it. The UJ-2 doesn’t scream innovation-it whispers it through its subtle complexities, historic techniques, and confident design. Competing in a tier shared with brands like F.P. Journe and Breguet, Urban Jürgensen’s rebirth under Voutilainen feels like both a return and a revelation.

With more models on the horizon, the UJ-2 is the first true expression of this new chapter-and it doesn’t disappoint.
