Vario x RZE UltraHex Trench Watch: A Modern Twist on a Classic Design

The Vario x RZE UltraHex Trench Watch is a remarkable collaboration between two Singapore-based watch brands.

Designed as a tribute to the vintage-inspired Vario 1918 Trench watch, it integrates RZE’s modern materials and cutting-edge design elements to create a unique timepiece. This limited-edition series, consisting of three distinct models, brings together the best of both brands, delivering a striking blend of classic appeal and modern durability.

The 37mm diameter case of the UltraHex Trench is crafted from grade 2 titanium, enhanced by RZE’s UltraHex surface coating. This makes it incredibly resistant to scratches-eight times more so than traditional stainless steel. The case features a matte sandblasted finish, offering a visually distinct look compared to the polished stainless steel versions from Vario

. A 2mm domed sapphire crystal sits atop the case, lending it both elegance and durability. Its 45mm lug-to-lug profile ensures a comfortable fit, and the fixed-bar design of the lugs accommodates only 18mm straps, contributing to the watch’s utilitarian charm.

For water resistance, the UltraHex Trench offers 100 meters, made possible by a screw-down caseback and a winding crown at the 4 o’clock position. This crown is adorned with a luminous RZE logo, distinguishing it from other models in Vario’s collection.

The three versions of this watch differ primarily in the dial materials and strap colors.

The first model showcases RZE’s signature “Medallion Yellow” enamel dial, while the second features a dial crafted from Timascus-a titanium alloy with a layered, Damascus-steel aesthetic. The third model sports a luminous forged carbon fiber dial, adding a futuristic touch. Despite these differences, all three watches maintain the same design elements, including large Arabic numerals and cathedral-style hands. A unique luminous RZE logo has also been added to the running seconds register, enhancing its co-branding appeal.

The watches are powered by the Miyota Caliber 82S5 automatic movement, a reliable choice known for its proven architecture. This movement offers a 40-hour power reserve and operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour. The dial is complemented by a bund-style strap made from durable crazy horse leather, available in different colors to match the dial’s design.

The bund strap, while divisive, works perfectly with the watch’s vintage aesthetic. It adds an intriguing boldness to the design, especially on larger wrists, but can be removed for those who prefer a more traditional two-piece strap. The watch’s price point is another appealing factor-ranging from $439 for the Medallion Yellow model to $499 for the Timascus and forged carbon versions. For those who appreciate a mix of modern materials and vintage styling, the Vario x RZE UltraHex Trench is an excellent offering at a fair price.
