vivo X Fold 5: Thinner and More Powerful than Ever

The highly anticipated vivo X Fold 5 is set to launch on June 25, and it promises to bring a slew of exciting improvements. The new foldable model is expected to be thinner, lighter, and more powerful than its predecessor, the X Fold 3 Pro.

Thanks to advanced technology, it will sport a larger 6,000mAh battery, an increase from the 5,700mAh battery of the previous model.

Vivo’s product manager, Han Boxiao, shared that the X Fold 5 will be 2mm thinner and 20g lighter than its predecessor. This brings the device’s closed thickness to just 9.2mm and its weight to a mere 216g. When opened, the thickness dips below the 5mm mark, although the exact figure will depend on the hinge design.

Impressively, vivo has managed to increase battery life without compromising on the device’s slim design. The X Fold 5 features the industry’s first fourth-generation silicon anode technology, which has allowed the battery to contain 2.5 times more silicon, increasing its density by 13%. The new battery also incorporates second-gen semi-solid electrolytes, which enable it to function in extreme cold temperatures as low as -30°C (-22°F).

While the battery is thinner, it’s also stronger than ever, with the product manager claiming it’s so light that you can even build a bridge with a card to hold it up.

The foldable smartphone market is heating up, with three major releases coming within weeks of each other. Vivo’s X Fold 5 will be released on June 25, followed by Honor’s Magic V5 on July 2 and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 on July 9. Vivo’s move to go thinner while packing in a larger battery gives it a solid edge, but Honor’s Magic V5 is gunning for the title of “world’s thinnest foldable,” and it’s rumored to feature a larger 6,100mAh battery. Meanwhile, Samsung’s Z Fold 7 is expected to have a 4,400mAh battery and be thicker at 8.9mm.

Overall, the vivo X Fold 5 looks like a solid upgrade over its predecessor, but there’s still room for improvement. While the device boasts a thinner profile, better battery life, and a brighter 4,500-nit peak brightness display, durability could still use some work. The previous model had an IPX8 rating, but adding dust resistance like Samsung’s IP48 would be a great improvement. Additionally, improvements to the audio would be appreciated, as foldable devices are often lacking in that area. Despite these minor concerns, the X Fold 5 seems poised to make a big splash in the foldable market.
