Yesterday at its highly anticipated Unpacked event, Samsung introduced its latest foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold7, Flip7, and Flip7 FE. While the Galaxy Z Flip7 saw an upgrade in battery capacity compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold7 unfortunately kept the same 4,400 mAh battery as the Fold6.
But why?
Samsung explained the decision to SamMobile by saying that a larger battery was a common demand among Galaxy Z Flip users, while the priorities for the Fold7 were different. The Fold7’s design focused on features like improved cameras, a slimmer and lighter build, and a larger cover screen.
Indeed, Samsung has delivered on those fronts with the Fold7, making it a strong contender in the market, particularly against its Chinese competitors. However, one area where it still lags behind is the battery. Given the slim design, a larger battery would likely only be feasible if Samsung adopts new battery technology, such as silicon-carbon (Si/C) cells, like some of the Chinese brands are doing. This would allow for more mAh in the same size, but it remains to be seen if Samsung will take that leap in the future.
As it stands, the Galaxy Z Fold7’s battery may be limited by its design and the larger screens it now needs to power. Whether future models will feature larger batteries or continue with the 4,400 mAh standard is still uncertain. Keep an eye out for a full review of the Fold7, coming soon.
