Xbox continues to move forward with its ambitious lineup of upcoming projects, despite recent news of mass layoffs affecting Microsoft. Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty confirmed that over 40 projects are currently under development, following the unfortunate cancellation of both Perfect Dark and Everwild.
Despite the setbacks, Xbox’s Summer Showcase during Summer Game Fest 2025 highlighted a range of exciting titles still in the pipeline. Fans were treated to new reveals like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, a sequel to the popular Grounded with a follow-up titled Grounded 2, DLC for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and fresh gameplay footage for Gears of War: Reloaded and Clockwork Revolution.
According to a report by Variety, all of these projects, along with every other first-party game shown at the showcase, remain unaffected by the layoffs. It’s important to note that while the games themselves are safe, some of the studios behind them may have experienced staffing cuts. The layoffs, which have hit across Microsoft, are not exclusive to the gaming division. However, the specific details regarding who was laid off and the number of people impacted are still emerging. As of now, we don’t know whether major studios like Obsidian or Turn10, the latter of which is behind Forza Motorsport, have been affected. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Turn10 could have lost up to 50% of its workforce, though this remains speculative at this stage.
The situation continues to develop, but despite these challenges, Xbox seems committed to delivering on its gaming projects. While cancellations like Everwild and Perfect Dark are disheartening for fans, the company is pushing forward with titles that show promising potential for the future of Xbox.
