YouTube Surges Ahead of TikTok with 200 Billion Daily Shorts Views

YouTube is once again proving its dominance in the streaming world, outshining not just traditional TV but also newer challengers like TikTok.

According to YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, YouTube Shorts now racks up a jaw-dropping 200 billion daily views-nearly triple the 70 billion TikTok reported back in March 2024.

While TikTok has long been seen as the king of short-form content, its parent company ByteDance has quietly stopped sharing updated view stats-a move many see as an admission that YouTube is pulling ahead. Mohan added that over 1 billion hours of YouTube videos are watched on TVs daily, not just phones or laptops.

These numbers aren’t just impressive-they’re historic. Nielsen’s latest Gauge report shows YouTube accounted for a record 12.5% of U.S. TV viewership in May, beating out every other streaming and broadcast platform for the fourth month in a row. Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao even noted that YouTube is changing the definition of television in 2025.

Surprisingly, over half of the top 100 most-watched YouTube channels get their highest view counts from TV screens. This proves YouTube isn’t just dominating mobile-it’s made itself at home in the living room.

What’s next? YouTube’s upcoming AI tool Dream Screen is set to enhance 60-second videos with smarter animations, audio, and visuals-potentially pushing Shorts even further ahead of TikTok in both reach and creativity.

Meanwhile, the broader industry is shifting fast. For the first time, streaming surpassed both cable and broadcast TV in May, capturing a massive 44.8% of TV usage. That’s a 71% jump over the last four years, while cable and broadcast have dropped to 24.1% and 20.1% respectively.

Looking back, Google’s 2006 acquisition of YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock seems like a bargain of historic proportions. Analysts now estimate YouTube alone could be worth up to $550 billion as a standalone company.

YouTube isn’t just the king of long-form content anymore-it’s eating TikTok’s lunch, taking over your living room, and shaping the future of TV itself.

Dream Screen sounds cool but if it's all AI junk it might get boring fast tbh

YTS views might be higher but TT is just way more fun. UI smoother, vids more creative, and algorithm nails it every time lol
